The oldest and largest Secretarial Training School in Ghana

The Government Secretarial School was founded in 1952 in Accra, Ghana, as part of the Africanisation policy under British Colonial rule. It aimed to train high-caliber secretarial staff for the civil service and other public sector organizations. The initial enrollment included three female students, and the three-month training covered Shorthand, Typing, and English Language. By 1957, the student body increased to 40, including 10 men and 30 women. The school has since trained students from various African countries and contributed to the establishment of secretarial schools in other nations. It has expanded over the years and now has six satellite campuses across Ghana. As the oldest and largest service provider for secretarial training in Ghana, the school is known for its expert, professional, and technical competence.

Overview

It is evident that the world of work is in a constant state of flux and change as technological development is introducing new skills and making others redundant. Indeed, we know that education is of overwhelming importance in determining individual’s position on the job market. Thus education is a decisive factor for income and employment possibilities throughout life especially in an era where physical/manual tasks are being handled by computer.

Government Secretarial Schools (GSS) equip students/trainees with the skills to work in the office as Secretaries, Office Managers, Special Assistants, Executive Assistants, Clerks, Administrators and so on. We also organize refresher courses for workers to upgrade and sharpen their skills and knowledge.

The GSS since 1952, has produced high calibre of graduates who have excelled themselves in various fields in Ghana and abroad.

Some of our products include Squadron Leader Millicent Melody Danquah (RTD), African’s Female Pilot, COP, Dr. Peter Wiredu, former Director, Ghana Immigration Service, DCOP. Douglas Akrofi Asiedu, former Greater Accra Police Commander, Dr. Jemima Lomottey, Head of ICT Faculty, Bank of Ghana, 

Mr. Nii Addey, former Senior Assistant Registrar University of Ghana, Legon and many secretaries working with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Ghana Embassies and High Commissions all over the world.

Government Secretarial School exists to provide high quality secretarial training to the Civil Service and the public.

A centre of excellence for secretarial training

  • Trains high calibre secretarial staff within the Civil Service, Public Service organizations and other quasi-governmental agencies.
  • Offers consultancy services to organizations in the area of testing and interviewing applicants, for job and existing staff for promotion.
  • Organizes refresher courses/induction courses for secretarial staff of organizations. Examines and awards certificates for courses and examinations conducted.
  • Organizes service-wide-in-service training courses for the Secretarial class of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other private establishments.
